My goal is to learn about you.
We will first explore when this started, how you react now, either what changed to get you here, or how you came to live here.
As I get to know you, you also get to know yourself – differently.
I want to give you the tools you need, so you can ride off into the sunset and never see me again. Kidding/not kidding, I want you to come and learn. Then take what you learn about the core of your issue, so you can recognize all the ways it pops up in disguise.
Psychological Whack-a-Mole is a thing, people.
Sound too simple?
It’s not, because it’s work.
Writer Steven Barnes says, “If you want to do something new, you have to stop doing something old.” He also says to stop and do a few minutes of deep breathing about five times a day – good advice.
He’s right. Getting something new means giving up old habits, coping mechanisms, old assumptions about who you are and how you do things.
Everybody learns how to move in the world from their family and neighbors. Sometimes those are good lessons, sometimes they are a little odd, and sometimes they’re horrible.
So this exploration, finding out what’s working, what’s not, challenging assumptions about identity and capability – that takes time and practice.
Therapy is every day; we meet only once a week.
But building every day, getting new insights, finding new ways – those are the keys. That Nike Swoosh and the slogan “Just Do It?” Commit to doing that even half the time; you’ll be a tank.
And I’m just as excited as you to see you start rolling.
About Me
“What’s next” is a familiar question for me. I was a newspaper reporter and a production artist, both careers that became unviable with economic changes. People tell me things − often deep and intimate things – out of nowhere. One of my friends sarcastically said that I should be a therapist since I was doing the work anyway.
Serendipity – I was in the right state of mind, open to change, ready for a new challenge, so I could “hear” that statement. Back to school, I went.
I was graduated with an MSW from NYU and worked in Hospice for several years. I was fascinated with Hypnotherapy’s possibilities, especially for lingering and buried trauma, so I trained for that.
I sought training in Single-Session Therapy after having intense intakes with highly motivated people, who would then tell me they felt better equipped to move on by themselves. I love the flexibility and focus of it.
After training with the Physicians for Human Rights, I’m also doing Immigration Psychological Evaluations as well.
I’m a crazy reader – mysteries, literature, classics, paranormal romance, regular romance, history, science fiction, fantasy – whatever I can find that looks interesting or odd.
I love to research things. I’m fascinated with gadgets and “outside the box” solutions. (I got tired of hard ice on the steps where the neighbors walked. Chopping ice is too strenuous – I bought a small flamethrower. Melts the ice great, and – bonus – I use it to get rid of all the weeds in my garden plot! Less work and huge results, two of my other favorite things.)
I like to look on Kickstarter and Indiegogo to find interesting projects to invest in; I enjoy helping people find solutions of all kinds.
I’m really interested in helping you find your solutions, too, call for a consultation.
